Ways of Reading English Literature

דרכים לקריאת ספרות אנגלית syllabus
2010-2011

Instructor:  Lindsey Shapiro PhD 2 credits
Course Number:  3062056-01
Hours: Wednesday 12:15-13:45 (5,6) full year

This course will introduce students to some of the basic ideas underlying literary theory. Theories of literature have things to say about how literature works, what it does and how it ought to be read and studied. The theories studied will be applied to literary texts, both fiction and poetry, and as the students learn  to approach a text through the prism of a particular theory , the richness and diversity in literary approaches to interpretation will be more fully appreciated. In addition to the enhancement of the reading experience on the part of the student teachers, the possibility of teaching theory to high-school students will be addressed. Approaching a text with a set of tools which differ  from those we naturally use, enables the reader to look at life’s issues through the eyes of the “other”.  In addition to teaching high-school students texts through which they can ask, “What does this text mean to me?”, theory can provide the means to relinquish the comfort of our own subjective reality and enter into someone else’s shoes and experience moments of “otherness”.
